Membership

Freemasonry is not a secret society — it is a society with secrets. We are open to any man of good character who seeks light.

Who Can Join

The Only Requirement Is the Desire to Improve

Freemasonry is open to any free man of mature age who comes of his own free will and accord, believes in a Supreme Being, and is of good moral character. We do not recruit — but if you are asking, that is a good sign.

Mission Lodge No. 169 is a diverse brotherhood. Our members span every profession, background, and walk of life. What unites us is the desire to become better men and to serve our community.

If you are curious, the best first step is simply to reach out. We will invite you to share a meal with us — no pressure, no ceremony. Just conversation.

01

Reach Out

Submit the inquiry form below or email us directly. A brother will be in touch to answer your questions and invite you to dinner.

02

Visit the Lodge

Join us for fellowship and dinner on a stated meeting night. Meet the brothers, ask your questions, and see if we are a good fit for each other.

03

Submit a Petition

If you wish to proceed, two members who know you will sponsor your petition. The lodge votes by secret ballot.

04

Receive the Degrees

There are three degrees — Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason. Each confers knowledge, symbolism, and responsibility in turn.

Common Questions

What Men Ask Before They Join

Is Freemasonry a religion?

No. Freemasonry requires a belief in a Supreme Being but is not itself a religion. Men of every faith are welcome. We do not discuss sectarian religion or politics in lodge.

What do Masons actually do?

We confer allegorical ritual degrees drawn from the craft of stonemasonry, hold fellowship dinners, conduct community service, and support each other in life. It is part fraternity, part philosophy, part ceremony.

Is it expensive?

There are initiation fees and annual dues. These are modest and vary. No man is turned away for financial hardship — speak with us privately and we will work something out.

How much time does it take?

Our stated meeting is once a month, on the first Tuesday. Additional events are optional. We ask only that you show up for the brotherhood as you are able.

What are the secrets?

The modes of recognition that allow Masons to identify one another are kept private. The philosophy, history, and work of the lodge are open — we have an extensive library and love a good conversation.

Can women join?

Mission Lodge No. 169 is a lodge under the Grand Lodge of California, which constitutes lodges for men. There are co-Masonic and women's Masonic organisations; we are happy to point you toward them.
